Why Galaxy depreciation looks different

Samsung discounts aggressively and often — official promotions, carrier deals and frequent sales mean the effective new price of a Galaxy is well below its list price for much of its life. Used prices anchor to that lower effective price, so the drop from list looks steeper than an iPhone's.

The flip side is that the curve flattens sooner. A three-year-old Galaxy tends to hold its remaining value better than the equivalent-age iPhone, proportionally speaking.

Ultra models are the exception

The Ultra line holds value markedly better than the base and Plus models. Bigger screen, better camera system, S Pen on the S-series Ultra — they stay desirable longer, and the used market reflects that.

Folding phones

Z Fold and Z Flip handsets are worth real money but are graded more strictly, for good reason: the folding mechanism and inner display are the expensive failure points. Check the inner screen carefully along the crease, and confirm the hinge closes flush with no gap. A Fold with a failing inner display is a Broken-grade device regardless of how the outside looks.

What moves the price

• Carrier lock — same as iPhone. Unlocked is worth most; smaller carriers worth notably less.
• Storage — matters, though less dramatically than on iPhone.
• Condition — see the grading guide. Galaxy screens are typically OLED, so check for burn-in.
• Battery health — Settings → Battery and device care.

Before you ship
